Love this, I, too, have an intelligent teen, and I too, see the problem with expecting obedience from them.

How are you defining intelligence? (ref. Goleman D.) Because this is not just about machines being more intelligent - it is also about human beings becoming more machine like and believing themselves to perceive machine intelligence as such. We have normalised machine behaviour in everyday life and I see it all around me, I see it as disconnection. Disconnection from self, from others and from environment.

well exactly. TBH what I've noticed about any definition of intelligence is that it shifts every time we want to think of something as not intelligent.

I tend to be incredibly anal about definitions (possibly my health sciences training) but this conversation is making me consider taking a looser approach. Leave room for interpretation- be responsive and adaptive instead of prescriptive.
